Personal accounting, built for the Mac

Chord Finance is a local-first Mac app for double-entry books, budgeting, and net worth in CAD and USD. Everything lives in a single SQLite file you own. There's no bank login and no account to create.

Why Chord exists

I built Chord for myself. I trusted GnuCash, but it never felt at home on a Mac, and I kept my net worth in a spreadsheet beside it. That meant hand-converted currencies, a stock-price formula, and no single number I trusted. I wanted my positions, my ledger, and my budget in one native app, entirely on my own computer.

What you get

  • Books that balance. Double-entry is enforced by the database. You get a Balance Sheet, an Income Statement, and monthly Cash Flow.
  • Holdings without lots. Investments are just a ticker and a share count. Prices refresh automatically, so there are no buy/sell transactions to log.
  • A rules engine. Set a rule once and Chord books matching transactions on import. Anything it can't place waits in a review queue where you assign it in one row.
  • Budgeting. Set one monthly amount per category and see budget vs. actual vs. variance.
  • CAD and USD. The Bank of Canada daily rate (with manual override) drives both your ledger and your investment values.
  • Mac-native and keyboard-first. ⌘K and ⌘1–⌘9 move you through the whole app. Privacy mode (⇧⌘H) hides every amount when you're working in public.

From bank export to balanced books

  1. Import your QFX file from your chequing or credit-card account. Re-importing never creates duplicates.
  2. Review and categorize. Rules handle the routine transactions, and you resolve the rest in the queue.
  3. Read your statements, all generated from the same balanced books.

Coming from GnuCash? Import your chart of accounts from a GnuCash CSV export (⇧⌘I). Your account tree comes across, though your old transactions don't.

Your data stays yours

  • Plain SQLite on your disk, with daily automatic snapshots
  • A .chordbackup export whenever you want one
  • No cloud and no account
  • Only three things ever leave your Mac: stock quotes via your own market-data key, the Bank of Canada exchange rate, and a version check against GitHub. Anonymous usage data is off unless you turn it on, and it never includes your ledger, amounts, or account names.

Good to know

  • Requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later
  • Works with any bank that can export QFX
  • End-of-day stock quotes use your own free Marketstack API key, stored in your Mac's Keychain
  • USD and CAD for now, with more currencies planned
  • A mobile app is planned

Free during beta. Pricing will be announced when the beta ends. Whatever it turns out to be, your data is never locked in.
